Better Choices for Pennsylvania: Take Action Now!

The Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center (PBPC) is a nonpartisan, statewide policy research projects that provides independent, credible analysis on state tax, budget, and related policy matters, with attention to the impact of current or proposed policies on working families – like you and me.

Pennsylvania is struggling with the worst budget crisis in decades. Balancing the budget with cuts alone will reduce access to essential services that families rely on and hurt the state’s economy over the long term. Deep budget cuts at the state level will lead to higher property taxes. The state cannot shift the responsibility and costs of state services onto local taxpayers. Deep cuts will also impact human services, education, and public safety. It will mean teacher layoffs and larger class sizes, and reduced services to vulnerable Pennsylvanians. Deep cuts are already affecting A Woman’s Place (AWP).

Senate Bill 850 (SB 850) does just this. It provides only for a “bridge” budget. There is much that remains to be negotiated between the legislative caucuses and the Governor.

What can we do? Take action now! Let your legislators know that they must urgently settle the budget crisis by setting a good budget. Remind them that the budget must not be balanced on the backs of children or vulnerable Pennsylvanians. Urge them to take a balanced approach to the budget shortfall.

Become an AWP Volunteer!
Volunteers are indispensable parts of A Woman's Place (AWP), as part of our organization, work, and success!

All volunteers must complete AWP's six-hour CORE training. This introductory training focuses on AWP's projects and programs and domestic violence issues, with a special focus on Bucks County and preparing participants to successfully communicate about AWP and domestic violence in their lives and in the community. Once completed, CORE Volunteers fill many roles at AWP, including administrative assistance, working on special events, and participating in community outreach and education.

Direct Service volunteer trainings also are held throughout the year. This 40-hour training prepares volunteers to work directly with AWP's clients in a specialized area.
After completing the Direct Service training, volunteers answer AWP's Hotline before moving on to a different area of direct service volunteer work, including First Response Team, Legal Advocacy, Prevention Education, and Support Groups. Additional training or observation time may be required for some volunteer positions.

Teens who wish to volunteer can do so after completing the six-hour Teen training. Teen volunteers are utilized in both direct and indirect services throughout the organization.

Check our Upcoming Events page for updated dates, times, and information on upcoming CORE and Direct Service trainings.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, contact Angela Hiller by email or call 215.343.9241 ext. 109.
